For all of you who are fan of Avatar The Last Air Bender this is going to be a treat. We will start with the image below:   Figure 1 1. The Magic wand Tool & Eraser Tool If you look at the figure 1 you can see the background of the image consists of only one color. So this is perfect candidate for using the magic wand to extract these characters. You can download this image or you can start with one of your own. 2. Open the image in Photoshop. I am using CS2 3. Copy the image you just opened by dragging the background layer to the 'New layer icon' in your layer palette.   Figure 2 4. Your layers palette should now look like figure 2 5. Select the magic wand tool and the settings in the toolbar as shown in figure 3:   Figure 3 6. Click in the right or left top corner of the image. Most of the white in the background is now selected. Hold down the shift key and keep clicking on the white background that is yet not selected. Make sure you click the white background in between the legs, hands and so on. Once all white background is selected hit the delete button or ctrl + d and now you got the character with a transparent background as shown in figure 4.   Figure 4 That is it it is that simple to extract anything with Magic Wand Tool. There will be a series of other articles on special effects in Photoshop based on this image.
